Weekend Update/Valentine's/Knock on Wood

Ready for church, practicing  some salsa
Sunday, 2/13:  Sunday and Church, We had a great sermon by Brian, our youth minister.  His sermon was called, "Do You Knock On Wood?" It was a wonderful sermon and I will discuss it later.

This is in the back seat of the hubby's "new" car.  The whole family was heading to Murray to see Lil' Nanny and have lunch with her.

We made it to Lil' Nanny's house.  She hadn't seen my older son since last August.

She fixed a delicious Sunday dinner.  (Fried chicken, meatloaf, mashed potatoes, lima beans, purple-hulled peas, hominy,
rolls)  She had something for everyone.  I brought the molten chocolate cake!

We stopped by the Peddlers' Mall & I restocked some of my earrings and bracelets.  I continue to sell there!!  Thanks to all of my Murray friends who have bought my jewelry!!  You know who you are!  I will continue to take new styles every few weeks or so.

My mother has bought a new house and we took my older son by to see it. (Her house is for sale!)  Here is Lil' Nanny with her only grandchildren.  My parents got the names, "Lil Nanny" and "Big Nanny" when my kids were little.

My younger son headed back to college from my mom's house.  He goes to Freed Hardeman College and it was closer for him to drive back from Murray.

Sunday night:  I enjoyed watching the Grammys.  I had to get up and take dance breaks throughout!!

Even the dog is sad on Sunday nights!!!

My son showing his new Celtic cross tattoo.  I don't necessarily approve, but he is an adult!  :0)  The Celtic cross is in honor of our Scottish/Irish ancestry.

Monday/Feb. 14/Valentine's Day:
Teacher do not like parties on Monday, but Valentine's Day is Valentine's Day!!

This is what I found when I went down to eat breakfast.  That is the new Grammy CD.

This is what I got my hubby! He is traveling for work this week, so we didn't have anything planned for the evening.

Ready or not..........Here I come!! Second graders go bonkers anytime things are a little different, so, you can imagine what they act like when they have lots of goodies and a party.

Party time

Wearing red in honor of Valentine's Day!

Perks of being a teacher:  Goodies from your students!!

I survived the day, the kids weren't too bad.  I was tired and decided not to go and work out after school.  I spent Monday night making earrings and bracelets.  Some were special orders and some were for gifts.

Tuesday, Feb. 16:  You know it's a long week when you have a party on Monday.  I'm not sure, but I think the moon is almost full.  Believe it or not, but that makes the kiddos bonkers too.  I almost felt like the kids were wilder today!! :/

Afternoon: I was going to fit in a quick run before I had to meet friends at Applebees. Well, guess what?!?  I had two different left shoes.  My son meet me with one of the missing pair and I did get to run on the treadmill for a little while.

5:00 @ Applebees:  My teacher friends and I meet and celebrate each others' birthdays.

The Applebee's crew singing, "Happy Birthday".

Happy Birthday Friend!! Doesn't she look great? Her secret???? She retired last year!!

Wednesday, February 16:  A normal day, but it's defin. a full moon now!!

Notice the boxes!  They are delivering a new Math series. :/

Wednesday afternoon:  I had a board meeting scheduled at 5:00, but a co-teacher's husband lost his battle with cancer after many months.  The other second grade teachers and I drove over to Hopkinsville to pay our respects. Afterwards, I finally washed all of the salt off my car.  I decided to go home and make it an early night.

Knock on Wood!  Have you ever said that?  Do you believe in it??  This past Sunday, our youth minister gave the sermon and he asked us this question.  Have you ever wondered where the expression comes from????

Today, knocking on wood is considered a superstition. According to Wikipedia, are used to express a desire to avoid "tempting fate" after making some boast or speaking of one's own death. The expression is usually used in the hope that a good thing will continue to occur after it has been acknowledged.  According to http://www.dictionary.com/ , it comes from the ancient belief that knocking on wood would ward off the evil spirits who lived in trees.  It was believed that if you were speaking of your good luck, you should knock on wood, so as not to make the spirits jealous.  This would appease the spirits who might think you were bragging about your good luck.

What do you brag or boast about???

The Bible even warns us about boasting.  When we brag or boast, we are saying in essence that we did it by ourselves. This is what the Bible says about boasting:

Proverbs 27:1  Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.

Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.  (We aren't to boast about our good works.  If we do, we may be tempted to think we earned our salvation.)

Jeremiah 9:23
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches,

1 Corinthians 1:26-31
Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”[

What do you boast in?

Do you boast in your wisdom as Solomon did?   In Ecclesiastes, Solomon learns that the more knowledge you have, the more sorrow your  increases.

Do you boast in your strength?  Samson boasted in his strength.  He thought all his strength was in his hair, and meanwhile he failed to acknowledge that it came from God.

Do you boast in your riches?  In Luke 12:16-20, we meet the rich young ruler, who loved his riches so much, that he was willing to lose his life for them.  Remember he went away sorrowfully.

Many people think that he they have more money they will be happy.  Studies have shown that no matter what some one's income is, they think if they made 40% more, they would be happy.

Do you boast in your life?
When things are going well in our lives, we often forget about God.  Sometimes we only turn to him when we are scared, worried, sad or upset.

Weakness can actually be a blessing.  Through our weakness, Christ can shine through!!

Agenda for the Rest of the Week:  Thursday will be a regular work day.  Friday, I will be taking a personal day and my husband will be taking my son to the airport.  He has to return to Afghanistan to finish the rest of his year.

I hope you have been enjoying the spring-like temperatures!!!  I know I have!  Enjoy the rest of your week!

xoxo

  2. Update: As my son said, the tatoo was in memory of his Grandfather. That is where we get the Scottish/Irish heritage.
